How Google AI Overviews pick sources

When Google decides to render an AI Overview, it spawns a parallel retrieval pass alongside the classical SERP. The candidate set is broadly similar to what would appear in the top 50 organic results — but the re-ranking is different. The AI Overview retrieval system weights: structured data presence (FAQPage, Product, Article schemas), passage extractability (clear 2–3 sentence answers in the body), recency (dateModified is read directly), and topical authority on the specific query.

Entity signals — Organization JSON-LD with sameAs links helps Google's knowledge graph confidently associate your content with your brand.

Priority order: (1) Add FAQPage schema to every content page that has Q&A-style sections. (2) Restructure long-form prose into 2–3 sentence answers at the top of each section. (3) Update dateModified on stale-but-accurate pages with even minor revisions. (4) Add Organization + sameAs schema sitewide. (5) Audit which competitor domains AI Overview cites for your category queries and pitch those publications.
